Appreciation can make a day - even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary
Margaret Cousins
I remember reading a letter in a newspaper, which a teenager had movingly written about her mother's goodnight and journey to bed. The teen said that her mother had said good night to her family, that she was going to have an early night. Some time later, the teen came into the kitchen only to find that her mother's "going to bed" journey involved a whole multitude of tasks to ensure that the family would be ready for the morning. So far as I recall, the teen touchingly expressed amazement at the amount of work her Mum did on her journey to the end of the day.
The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated
It's often the little things and efforts that go unnoticed, but it's nice to acknowledge the doers efforts. "Thanks for all the things you do for us" can go a long way. We all need to feel appreciated, noticed, loved - these are basic human emotions and needs. If we take Mums for instance, they work away behind the scenes, organising, thinking ahead, juggling, helping, encouraging, telling us off, thinking of others, tidying up, making sure things are ready for the next day - it all takes effort.
We often say "thanks," and it's often on the way out through the door, on the phone as we're putting down the receiver, a mechanical gesture that we do while our mind is already on the next thing. So it's nice to take just a few moments and show someone you appreciate them.
Always remember, everyone is hungry for praise and starving for honest appreciation
David Berg
Special efforts equally - the dinner party - "It was a wonderful party, fab food, great company - thank you for a very special evening" - the day out "Thank you for your company - I really enjoyed our time together, let's do it again soon," can make someone feel special. There's no need to go overboard - just say what you feel. Giving thanks is a way to show that we have noticed the efforts of another - which makes them feel special. And it makes you feel pretty darn good, too!
